Membership
The Application Process, what to expect:
First, we would like to get to know you. Whether you've decided to join and sent in an application or still have questions and submitted a form you will soon hear from our Line Officers. They will take the time to address any questions and concerns you might have while asking a few questions of you. There is no reason to be nervous, just be yourself.
Presentation of member. Once you've completed the paperwork and pass your interview, your packet gets presented to the Squad at a monthly meeting. Once approved you will be invited to the next meeting to begin your service with us.
Your first year as a probationary member. Our intent for your first year is for you to learn how the squad operates and as it says in our By-Laws, "Probationary members are to learn first aid during their probationary term..." During this time you will be allowed access to the building and the other benefits of membership. The only limitations are on your ability to vote, hold elected positions in the Squad, and drive the vehicles. With the satisfactory completion of your probationary year and a clear background check, you will be granted full active membership.
A background check and fingerprints? This is a State requirement for volunteer organizations. Due to the sensitive nature of responding to medical emergencies all potential members must pass a background investigation conducted by the Oceanport Police Department. Applicants must also have their fingerprints on file. Upon acceptance into the first aid squad, you will be given direction on how to get fingerprinted and apply for the background check.
What's expected of a member? As Active members in Good Standing there are some requirements or expectations. The First Aid Squad has general business meetings once a month that members are expected to attend. These meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm (1930hrs) unless announced otherwise. These meetings allow the membership to discuss a wide variety of topics and usually last between 45-90 minutes.
Members with an interest in Emergency Response are also expected to take a 'duty night.' This is an assigned night where you are responsible for answering emergency calls between the hours of 11pm and 6am (2300-0600hrs). This will be explained in greater detail during your interview and probationary year.
